This reminds me of something the trustafarians I ran with in undergrad would wear.
Fact: I already have a pair of Birkenstock Arizona’s in my closet.
cannot have enough distressed denim
This is the perfect indoor layer.
All the caftans, all the time.
I just bought this set!
I was obsessed with this tie dye collection.
My closet can use more embellished tunics.
The temperatures in Philadelphia have been in the 90s this week. As I was walking around Center City running errands, I had beads of sweat running down my face and was starting to develop swamp ass.
Reflecting on the day, I realize that I should have worn something from the hippie side of my closet: a tunic, caftan, or midi dress would have provided ample ventilation. I think the hippies are on to something in their summer style choices; my mind goes to early 2000s Bonnaroo, before festival fashion became what it is today. Manchester, Tennessee even in early June is intense, and most of the festival attendees set up camp for the entire three days. If the hippies at Bonnaroo can handle three days in a wardrobe of breezy dresses, caftans, and tunics, I can stand the Philadelphia heat in the same pieces.

The moment I saw the tie dye collection from Tory Burch, I was all in. Sign me up. I wrote about the tunic being on my wish list several months ago, as well as other items in the collection. While the tunic does not have any stretch in it, there is a hidden zipper beneath an arm, which allows one to get in and out of the tunic with ease, no matter how much you have unintentionally bulked up your shoulders. Speaking on behalf of a friend.
The sunglasses are perfection. Blue lenses and gold arms? That is slam dunk in the form of shades. I am as excited to wear them these days, as I was when they first came in the mail. I wrote about how I had passer’s remorse on them once they disappeared from the online store. Cue me implementing all FBI-level search tactics in order to find a pair. Finally, I just called the store, they had a pair in stock, and several days later they were in my sunglass storage box.
The last time I wore the shorts was two weeks ago, and then last Indian summer. I can tell you that I have worn these at least once a week, and all 4th of July weekend. I love that they have a longer inseam as far as denim cutoffs go. Especially since these days, brands tend to release denim cutoffs that rival the length of boycut short underwear, I am thankful that I can find a pair with inseam lengths that provide more coverage.

While my graphic tee preference undoubtedly goes to genuine vintage, few brand-new vintage-inspired graphic tees will inevitably catch my interest. After Christmas and before New Years, I spied this particular one at a boutique in Center City. A few weeks ago, I was discussing shopping with my grandma and she mentioned that if she remains obsessed with an item (likely a gardening gadget, knowing that sweet lady) for a week after first spying it, she will buy it. I take after my grandma in that way because by the time 2017 rolled around, that graphic tee found a home in my dresser, just waiting for summer!
No doubt that I get outfit inspiration from past decades. I hope you all get a good laugh at what I got this outfit inspiration from:
Yes, it is Victor from Wet Hot American freakin’ Summer. I just re-watched the First Day of Camp edition two Fridays ago, in anticipation of the new series this August. (Sidebar: the original movie is no longer on Netflix. Pour one out.) Once you stop laughing, please do chime in on who wore the muscle tee and cut-off denim look the best.
I traded in the sweatbands for stacked bracelets and the Birkenstocks for metallic gold sandals and added a pair of bomb sunglasses. The line between cult movie character and myself is definitely defined by the accessories, y’all.

I was so disappointed to have to cancel our Hilton Head vacation. My fiance’s mom’s side annually reunites every fall. This was the first year that I managed to talk him into taking the time off to unplug and unwind. Unfortunately Hurricane Matthew had other plans.
Last week my fiancé and I were both out of town for business. Since we would have less than a 24 layover at home between the work return flights and vacation departure flights, we packed for Hilton Head well in advance. While I try to stay restrained when it comes to packing for vacation (I have been known to keep it to a backpack), the fiance has preferred status with our preferred airline, granting him a free checked bag. Trust me when I say that this does not excite him to the same extent that it excites me. I convinced him that checking a shared large suitcase with each of us carrying a backpack with one day/night of clothes and toiletries would be ideal.
These are my favorite items from the Hilton Head suitcase:
- Calypso Henrika Caftan: I wore this multiple times over the July Fourth weekend and many times since then. While it is beautiful in photos, it is gorgeous in person. It has delicate pink beading along the neckline and the wrists. It is just sheer enough to show your swimsuit underneath. Although I am 6’2″, I can get away with the length of a medium. I purchased the caftan at the beginning of the summer and it is still available and on deep discount now.
- La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF: Sunscreen is a necessity even on the cloudiest of days. My dermatologist recommended that I switch from standard foundation to the La Roche Posay Tinted Moisturizer and SPF years ago and I have never looked back. The last time I was in CVS picking up the Tinted Moisturizer, I picked up a tube of the Anthelios SPF 60 as well. It is perfection.
- 7 for All Mankind White Denim Rolled Hem Shorts: This summer I have become obsessed with 7 for All Mankind denim shorts. The first pair I purchased were cutoffs and the length was the major selling point. (I think the inseam is longer than cited on the product information.) As a tall woman, the sad truth is that shorts can border on inappropriate, but the cutoffs and the white rolled hem shorts were the perfect inseam. These shorts run true to size.
- Calypso Prudence Kimono: I coveted this kimono since earlier this summer when I almost purchased it along with the Calypso Henrika Caftan. I wish I had ordered it earlier as I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived two weeks ago. It is even more fantastic in person. The kimono is light silk, and so delicate and so detailed. While it is marked down with an additional percentage reduction, you can tell it is an expensive piece. This item runs large; I wear a small.
- Lilly Pulitzer Elsa Blouse: The Elsa Blouse is a Lilly Pulitzer mainstay. When I saw the pink chevron in the window of a Georgetown boutique back in the spring of 2014, I became a woman obsessed. It has been in regular rotation ever since. The Elsa Blouse runs large; the length of the small is ideal.
I think it is time to start planning our next warm-weather resort trip.

#armparty of three?
Wrinkle City Population: this shirt
With the changing weather, I have been conflicted when selecting outfits. Can I wear white if the leaves are still green? Can I wear summer fabrics if the daily temperature is projected to hit 90 degrees? I used to be vigilant when I comes to following these rules, but lately I just want to wear what makes me comfortable and happy.
I ordered this open shoulder shirt last year, because I like the color, the cutout shoulder trend, and it looked like an ideal transitional weather item. I wore it for the first time, with a pair of denim cutoffs and metallic sandals to dinner at Buddakan a few weeks ago. It was ideal for the night: walking to dinner through upper 70 degrees and dining in a restaurant ten degrees chillier.
If I could go back, would I buy this shirt knowing how it wears? Despite the fact that it was a great layer in terms of fabric for this summer / fall weather purgatory, probably not. As shown in the photos, it wrinkled almost as soon as I slipped it on. It requires a racer-back bra, as the cutaway sleeves would expose bra straps on a standard style. The sleeves were shorter than I would have liked. It was a bit boxy throughout the body. But maybe you have shorter arms and maybe you like roomier pieces. If so, this is your shirt.
Let us discuss the shorts –
While I am having buyer’s remorse on the shirt, I am obsessed with the shorts. I have worn them for three weekends straight and plan on breaking them out again in a few weeks for vacation at Hilton Head. After the first day of wear, I even bought them in the darker wash. My favorite part was that I did not feel overexposed in them. So many denim cutoffs border on inappropriate. These 7 For All Mankind denim shorts weren’t obscenely short, which let’s face it, is only underscored when you top six feet in height. Amirite ladies?
